casion. Now, between Josie and McCall, D.J. didn't know what to think.
"If I'm so stupid, then why do you bother with me?" D.J. growled.
Josie reached over and patted D.J.'s feet through the thin bedspread. D.J. jerked her toes away from the angel's touch, not in the mood for comfort of any kind. Josie's eyes gave a flash of pain before she turned her face away to stare out the window. "You're not stupid, D.J., just misguided. I'm here to guide you."
"All right. Let me have it."
"What?" Josie jerked her head in D.J.'s direction to stare at her in surprise.
"You want to talk, I'll listen. Since ignoring you isn't making you go away, maybe hearing you out will do it."
The hope on Josie's face retreated when a reproving frown took its place. "I don't deserve your attitude. I'm trying to save you from an eternity of unhappiness. The least you could do is appreciate me."
D.J. swallowed, guilt flooding her. Josie was right; she was being a snot. But her body still clamored for McCall in a way that grated on her nerves. No man had ever had this effect on her. She wanted these unknown feelings to stopbut she didn't know how to make them obey her command. She'd tried to shut off her emotions, as she'd done all her life. But every time he touched her she couldn't think, she could only feel. Her lack of control frightened her. And when she was frightened she struck out with her cultivated "tough cop" attitude. The
